    Dr. Weyrauch No. 27Nymphenkuss(Human) contains potassium in two interesting binding forms in a herbal blend, including birch, nettle, dandelion and hawthorn. Potassium contributes to the normal function of nerve tissue, muscle function and the maintenance of normal blood pressure.

    Potassium and sodium are productive counterparts in the human body. They are among the bulk elements and, together with chlorine, belong to the electrolytes. The main sources of potassium and sodium are body fluids and soft tissue. In terms of nutritional physiology, the focus is actually only on sodium, which is consumed far in excess of requirements in today's diet via table salt (Na Cl). The outstanding importance of potassium, on the other hand, has been neglected. This is because potassium not only contributes to the normal function of nerve tissue, but also to normal muscle function and the maintenance of normal blood pressure. While 95% of sodium is present in the extracellular space, potassium is concentrated in the cell (80% in the muscle cells), where it is responsible for maintaining osmotic pressure (water balance) and the acid-base balance. The body's fluid volume is regulated by sodium and potassium. With the help of an enzyme called sodium-potassium ATPase, which is localized in the cell wall, sodium is transported out of the cell and potassium is transported into the cell. The unequal distribution of the two alkali metals serves to enable the nervous and muscular systems to function, to actively transport nutrients from the intestine into the cells and to maintain normal blood pressure.

    Daily intake should be ensured:
    Daily requirements must be met for both elements, as both sodium and potassium have a low storage capacity and any excess is quickly excreted. Potassium is reabsorbed in the large intestine. This is only possible to a sufficient extent if the stool has a normal consistency and, conversely, a very firm stool can indicate that it has been busy reabsorbing potassium for an extremely long time. At this point at the latest, it is worth looking at some figures:

    According to the DGE (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung e.V.), a potassium intake of 3500 to 4700 mg per day appears to be suitable for preventing high blood pressure and stroke. The intake of 4000 mg of potassium per day recommended by the DGE is made possible by eating approx. 1.5 to 2 kilograms of very special foods:

    Potatoes are particularly rich in potassium with 417mg, spinach with 554mg, Brussels sprouts with 447mg or fennel with 395 mg per 100g of fresh produce. However, potassium is transferred to the cooking water during cooking, so that almost 100mg per 100g of fresh substance can easily be lost. Dairy products such as cheese contain around 150mg, meat slightly more. Dried fruit is particularly rich in potassium, e.g. apricots (dried: 1370 mg/100g). It is therefore obvious that a sufficient potassium intake is only possible by eating plenty of vegetables (1 kg per day).

    Meeting the potassium requirement becomes questionable if little food (less than 1.5 kilograms of food) is consumed, as is often the case during Lent. Compensation through drinks (grape juice 148mg potassium/100g, sour cherry juice 201 mg potassium/100mg or carrot juice 209 mg potassium/100g juices) can have a positive effect on the potassium balance, but must be taken into account for diabetics and dieters due to the high sugar content.
