The fact that feeding starch is problematic for many horses, especially those that belong to the robust breeds or are not exercised much, is becoming increasingly apparent in our stables. Starch is converted into sugar in the small intestine, which is absorbed directly into the bloodstream and thus drives up the blood sugar level. If this sugar is not converted directly into muscle work, such feeding can lead to long-term health problems, including insulin resistance, EMS or PSSM.
However, if grain is completely omitted from the diet, the valuable proteins and fatty acids that are normally included in the concentrate feed are also missing. Our Seedy Crackers are the perfect solution! We only use so-called oilseeds for these crackers, which contain a high proportion of valuable oils, proteins and, in some cases, mucilage, but are also starch-free. The balanced mixture of grains provides a broad spectrum of fatty acids, just as horses do in nature. They also taste incredibly delicious! A much sought-after reward for particularly good work performance, even for horses that are fed a starch-free diet.
